The British Holiday vs the Weather
By James Middleton - Added 25th of August 2007So, we have had a terrible year so far. The summer of 2007 will never be forgotten. The wettest since 1839 for England and Wales as a whole! How has this affected the Great British holiday industry? Well, as a whole our damp flop of a summer has taken it's terrible tole on holiday businesses up and down these fair isles of ours. We really have had a kicking this year. And what is our response? Bookings for holidays abroad this summer have seen an increase of 150%! Come on people, call your self patriotic! Get your wellies on and waterproof together and pack your suitcase. Admit it, we love bad weather us Brits, it's all we talk about; 'it's too hot', 'it's too cold', 'too wet', 'too dry'. That's what makes us great. OK, jokes aside.
We do like to meander down to the beach when the weather is fair and the sea is warm, but this country has plenty to see and do and marvel at no matter the weather. I love the UK with its mountains, lakes, woodlands, heaths, historical villages, towns and cities. There is no place like it in the world and I simply couldn't live anywhere else. I wish others would share my enthusiasm.
I always holiday within the UK, although to many this seems a little odd. For many the weather (don't worry, I won't mention it again) is a major put off. Maybe the weather doesn't bother me too much. I think it's great to look out at dark looming clouds descending on to the mountains of the Scottish Highlands, or walk through a emerald green forest after the rain. Soppy-get! In this age of growing environmental awareness, keeping things 'local' both for travel and economic sake makes perfect sense.
The British holiday industry need us! Let's show our support and stay in the UK next year and never loose our appreciation of what we have here.
