Sunderland, Whitby and Durham
By Elsie - 26th of January 2007
Now living in Coventry, I still visit Sunderland where I was born. Not only does it have a large sandy beach and friendly people, it is also such a fantastic place to explore the north east coast from.
You can explore Hadrian's Wall or visit Durham with it's Castle and Cathedral. But I like to travel south through Middlesborough, crossing the Transporter Bridge made famous in the TV series 'Alf Weidersehen Pet' where you drive onto the bridge, switch off your engine and are 'transported' across to the otherside.
Continue to travel on south to the magical bay of Whitby made famous in the TV series 'The Royal' and in the story of Count Dracula who is supposed to have visited Whitby.
There is something for everyone - from fresh caught fish to Whitby jet jewellery; from the picturesque harbour seen from the cliff top with its whale jaw, to the beautiful church and ruins of Whitby Abbey at the top of the other cliff with its 199 steps down to the harbour; with myths and legends galore.
The North East of England is a magical place to explore.
